Year twelve Product Design entered the RSA Pupil Design Awards this year, a nationwide competition where students respond to briefs on societal issues set by the Royal Society of Art, Manufacture and Commerce. The choice of briefs were Food for Thought, Learning to Belong and Green Streets. The whole class got a visit from a professional Product Designer who talked through his career as well as giving individual advice on designs. Theo Puddefoot and Lily Macaskill were shortlisted as finalists, meaning they had to give a zoom presentation to four industry professionals and take questions from them. Both came in after their exams to prepare and worked really hard. They were amazing in the presentations, tackling very difficult questions like ‘what have you learnt about social design at a personal, community and societal level.

Lily’s idea for a pop up book to educate young children on food waste that was printed on plantable seed paper won her age category! We attended an awards ceremony at RSA House in Central London where they got to discuss their ideas with RSA fellows, attend design workshops and be recognised onstage for their achievements. Lily has been featured on the RSA blog and as a result of winning the competition has been asked to write a guest post on the government’s Design Policy blog, an amazing opportunity.
