Alexandra Park School (APS) is a thriving and dynamic comprehensive school in the London Borough of Haringey, boasting excellent examination results, a great atmosphere and a well-deserved reputation. We offer an outstanding curriculum experience in our main school and the sixth form. We are based on a beautiful five-acre site adjacent to Durnsford Park within sight of Alexandra Palace. Now entering our seventeenth year since opening, and our sixth year as an academy, we have expanded to meet growing demand for places. We are a well-established and proactive partner within Haringey’s family of schools. We are the most sought-after school in the borough and have been since 2008.
At APS we are proud to be a truly comprehensive school offering a broad, balanced and accessible curriculum that recognises values and responds to the needs of our rich and diverse community. Our students live in times of rapid cultural change and increasing cultural diversity. We believe that, along with all other educationalists, we have an important role to play in enabling them to understand and respect different cultural values and traditions and the processes of cultural change and development. We foster confident and responsible citizens who are prepared to meet the challenges of life.
Our school motto is “Success for all” and we achieve this vision by providing an environment in which all of our students flourish. A highly developed and embedded culture of learning is at the heart of everything we do. When they join us, and throughout their experience at APS, our students find a supportive and friendly environment, where high standards of discipline and behaviour are expected and maintained. We provide a safe, structured working environment where every individual is encouraged to strive for excellence.
Our students study a predominantly traditional curriculum with a focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science. At Key Stage 4 academic achievement is high, with more than 80% of students leaving with 5 or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English and maths. Our aim is to ensure that our students make excellent progress from the point at which they arrive with us in Year 7. Progress in all areas is outstanding. Our value-added data puts the school currently in the top 5% nationally. The performance of English, maths, science, languages and the humanities sees them placed in similar rankings.
The sixth form is thriving. It has a comprehensive intake and offers an extensive range of courses. The provision has been independently assessed (ALPS) as in the top 10% of institutions nationwide every year since its opening in 2006. Ofsted judged our sixth form as Outstanding in every category. In 2016 92% of our students achieved A*-C grades at A level, with 70% achieving A*-B and 43% being awarded the top A*/A grades. Two thirds were successful in their application to one of the UK's top 30 universities and more than 95% of our students have been able to follow the course they had chosen at their first choice university.
It is little wonder that The Sunday Times named Alexandra Park School in its top 20 state schools.
Our latest Ofsted Inspection notes that:
Alexandra Park School is an outstanding school. The decisive and inspirational leadership of the Headteacher and a highly effective leadership team has enabled Alexandra Park School to continue its journey of rapid improvement. It is a reflective and self-critical organisation which lives its aim to ‘put learning first’ through its every action.
Students are highly motivated learners who make rapid progress from their starting points through outstanding teaching, an excellent curriculum and exemplary care, guidance and support. Attainment is high and rising. Students are highly committed to their studies and are aspirational. Their ambitions are high as is reflected in large numbers of students progressing to the most competitive courses and universities.
We recognise that our strategy of appointing outstanding, highly qualified staff who bring vision, energy, enthusiasm and very high expectations to the school has been instrumental in our achievements.
APS is also a National Teaching School, the ‘New River Teaching Alliance’. Our mission is to recruit the very best candidates into the profession, to develop existing teachers and to coordinate research into the best possible educational practice. The school receives extra funding from the government in recognition of this role. This helps to further raise academic standards.
We are consultative, proactive and outward looking and truly at the ’cutting edge’ of new educational developments. APS has created a great environment for learning and a great environment to work in. This is down to the hard work and commitment of staff.
