Alexandra Park Sixth Form Admission Arrangements 2023
1.1. Alexandra Park School (APS) Sixth Form is a comprehensive sixth form providing an exciting range of courses.
1.2. Admission to the sixth form at APS is managed by the school. Any queries regarding sixth form admissions should be directed to the school.
1.3. The capacity for the sixth form is 550. This is a combined figure for years 12 and 13.
2. Admission to the Sixth form
2.1. Admission to the sixth from will be from:
students in year 11 at APS; and
students from outside APS
2.2. The minimum number of students entering the sixth form from outside APS will be 75 each year, subject to meeting the below admissions criteria.
2.3. Applicants should complete the on-line application form on the website. Students are entitled to apply in their own right. All application forms must be completed and returned by 31 January for entry the following autumn.
2.4. Students will be admitted into the sixth form at the start of the Autumn term in each academic year.
2.5. All decisions regarding admissions will be taken by the Admissions Committee of the Board of Trustees, in accordance with the admissions criteria outlined below.
3. Admissions criteria
3.1. All applicants must achieve the following grades in order to be eligible for admission into the sixth form:
Programme of study

At least eight grades 7-9 in GCSE courses, including 7s in English and Maths
Four A level courses
At least five 5-9 grades in GCSE courses, including 5s in English and Maths

At least five 4-9 grades in GCSE courses
3.2. If an applicant meets these criteria they will be eligible for consideration for a sixth form place.
3.3. All students in the current Year 11 who meet the academic entry criteria will continue into the Sixth Form, if they wish.
4. Oversubscription Criteria
4.1. Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the places available then admission will be determined in accordance with the following priority of admission criteria:
- i. Looked after children and previously looked after children. A 'looked after child' is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in Section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989) at the time of making an application to a school. Previously looked after children are children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a child arrangements order or special guardianship order).
- ii. Students who have an exceptional medical or social need for a place at Alexandra Park Secondary School. Applications will only be considered under this category if they are supported by a written statement from a doctor, social worker or other relevant independent professional confirming the exceptional medical or social need and demonstrating how Alexandra Park School Sixth Form is the only school that can meet the defined needs of the child.
iii. Applicants who live closest to the school using the nearest available safe walking route (Distance is measured from the home address to the main entrance of the school using the Local Authorities’ computerised measuring system).
Where a child lives normally during the school week with more than one parent at different addresses, the permanent home address for the purposes of school admissions will be the one where the child spends the majority of school nights Monday–Friday.
5.1. If the distance criterion is not sufficient to distinguish between two or more applicants for the last remaining place, then random allocation will be used. This process will be supervised by somebody independent of the school
6. Subject choices
6.1. APS will offer all Year 11 students at APS Information, Advice and Guidance meetings, including on Sixth Form subject choices, during the course of Year 11.
6.2. External applicants may be invited to a meeting to discuss subject choices. Students will be asked to provide a reference from their previous school which will be used to inform discussion of subject choices.
6.3. Alexandra Park School Sixth Form makes every effort to offer students subjects that reflect their chosen subjects, however there can be no guarantee that students will be able to study their preferred subjects.
6.4. Students are offered subjects on the basis of the number of places available on each subject and with reference to the subject-specific entry grades published in the APS Sixth Form Prospectus and APS Sixth Form Course Description Booklet on the school website. Decisions on subject allocation are made by the school.
7.1. The parents of a student (and/or student themselves) refused a place at the school have a right to appeal to an independent appeal panel. The decision of the independent appeal panel is binding on all parties.
8. False Information
8.1. The Board of Trustees wants to ensure that applicants who provide misleading or fraudulent information do not deprive other children of a rightful place at Alexandra Park School Sixth Form.
8.2. We take any attempt to obtain a school place through fraudulent means very seriously. If the Board of Trustees becomes aware that a place was secured for a child at the school on the basis of misleading or false information, it reserves the right, within the terms of the School Admissions Code, to withdraw the offer of a place or, if the child has already started at the school, to remove the child from the school roll.
8.3. We consider that every school place obtained by deception is unfair, as other children are being deliberately denied their legitimate claim to take up that place. We work collaboratively with Haringey Council to carry out rigorous checks to ensure that applications are not fraudulent.
8.4. In the event that APS makes the offer of a place in the sixth form on the basis of a fraudulent or intentionally misleading application which has effectively denied a place in the sixth form to a student with a stronger claim, the offer of a place will be withdrawn.
